About this home

2138 Saint James Place in the Rittenhouse Square area offers a wonderful blend of historic charm and comfortable living in English Village, one of Philadelphia's most beautiful and distinctive residential enclaves. One of just 20 historic townhomes that evoke the romance of a London-style mews, this property features approximately 1,700 square feet of living space, three bedrooms, two full bathrooms, a versatile home office or den (with the potential to serve as a fourth bedroom if a door is added), and charming outdoor space. Comfortable and move-in ready, the home can be enjoyed just as it is or thoughtfully reimagined with updates and renovations to reflect your own personal style. A welcoming vestibule opens into gracious living and dining areas, where hardwood floors and well-proportioned rooms create a warm and inviting atmosphere. The spacious living room is anchored by a charming wood-burning fireplace and built-ins, while oversized windows frame lovely views of the beautifully landscaped Village gardens. The formal dining room comfortably accommodates six to eight guests, providing an ideal setting for intimate dinners and memorable gatherings. Just beyond, the kitchen offers generous cabinetry and storage, along with convenient rear access to an outdoor area that presents the possibility of creating a private enclosed deck. The second floor features a lovely, light-filled primary bedroom with two spacious closets and a vintage marble bathroom that reflects the home's character. A separate office or cozy den completes this level, offering a flexible space for working from home, relaxing, or potentially creating an additional bedroom. The third floor offers two generously proportioned bedrooms and a full bathroom, providing comfortable and private accommodations for family or guests. An unfinished lower level includes a dedicated laundry area, a toilet, and ample storage, with wonderful potential for additional finished living space. Designed by noted architect Spencer Roberts in the early 1920s, English Village remains one of Philadelphia's most treasured architectural gems. Its intimate courtyard, mature landscaping, and distinctive historic homes create a sense of privacy and tranquility that is truly unique in the heart of the city. Ideally situated within the highly regarded Greenfield School catchment, this exceptional location places you just moments from Rittenhouse Square, Fitler Square, the Schuylkill River Trail, and some of Philadelphia's finest restaurants, boutiques, and cultural destinations. With convenient access to 30th Street Station, University City, major medical institutions, and I-76, the best of city living is right at your doorstep. 2138 Saint James Place offers a charming, peaceful setting and a rare opportunity to own a piece of Philadelphia's architectural history. Whether you appreciate the home's existing character and comfortable living spaces or envision adding your own signature touches through thoughtful renovations, this special residence offers the flexibility to make it uniquely yours.
